Trailer ( 44 sec) )

Single Channel Video - 10min
Screened originally as a three channel work, made with participants at the True Nature Festival - Koh Phangan, Thailand 2017. Exhibited at the Power Play Biennale, SINGAPORE 2020

An unscripted video work performed, filmed, edited and screened on site as an installation - happening . The resultant film describes an arc, opening on the human urge of personal adornment and tribal identity mark-making, as a grounding process toward a deeper sense of place. Midway, the intervention of a synthetic veil by the introduction of plastic coloured gels work as impromptu masks, culminates in a crisis of suffocation. The fall, followed by an act of absolution and repair are presented as a ritual 'taking to the waters' in a rite of return that completes a circular arc of time. The ocean, along with the film’s score of whale sonar, permeates as a call from the wild and as a backdrop, a symbol of the timeless, becoming both the liminal staging ground and central character with the ocean’s life giving origins. The phenomenal and the noumenal are explored spontaneously within a random group of participants in a bhuttoesque - fluxus style art making process.

Soundtrack ‘The Crystal Cove’ by Darshan Atmosphere

‘‘ I like to take still photographs while film making, so that during the process of creating an art work there’s room to realize other pieces to a series. Often these works can take the form of large canvases, printed in an industrial facility, which are then hand finished with various mixed media including paint, metallic powder, local clay and a signature evaporated sea water technique’’

‘‘The crafted element for me is intrinsic to the conceptual nature of these works, mirroring the neo-shamanic aspect that engages with liminal states of perception. I view this stage of the process as an essential meditative component, creating a more subtle reading of each piece beyond simply a manipulation of materials upon it’s surface.”

Artist Statement

Being, Nothingness and the close connection to Nature inform these works with the notions of perception and sense of place

Living with the ocean for an extensive period of time - based on a remote jungle island in Thailand’s Gulf of Siam - has invited a journey into the frequencies of Nature’s sounds. The shoreline and the forest inhabit a space I term as ‘the breathing edge of the landscape’, where the invisible influence of sound is intimately woven throughout the fabric of experience. My interest here being the site specific spatiality of sound and the liminal spaces they generate. The whispers of Nature create a living dialogue that can be mapped and explored to open up fresh vistas of perception. Visually these works are both a record of sonic influences upon states of being and a reference to memory, while being in raw Nature.

Water and its movements of waves, currents and rain has been studied to affect a subtle healing charge in the body with the release of negatively charged ions into the surrounding atmosphere whereby affecting one’s consciousness.. A more acute sense of balance becomes palpable, revealing the essence, the heart of a space, particularly while immersed in and around aquatic environs. Most notably with attention given to the audible , a perceptual shift within oneself can be observed. Witnessed, unimpeded by the white noise of modernity, a more meditative state of flow becomes apparent by a deeper listening to telluric sound fields as a ritual type of ‘return and repair’ with Nature..
